AIO-Ready Schema Design
AIO-Ready Schema Design
Whether AI search cites you depends less on how much you write than on whether facts can be extracted on their own. As long as everything lives in one rich-text blob, structured data cannot be derived after the fact.
As an official microCMS partner, we design schemas that model definitions, FAQs, comparisons, and factual fields as types — and migrate your existing content into them.
Common Challenges We Solve
- Article bodies are all rich text, making structured data impossible to derive
- FAQs are hand-written as HTML on each page and hard to keep in sync
- The same service is described slightly differently across several pages
- Pricing and scope are buried in prose and can't be extracted on their own
- Planning a renewal and want to switch to an AI-search-ready structure
What We Model as Types
Definitions
Definitions and comparisons dominate AI search queries. We model terms, services, and concepts as their own type so every page references one canonical definition.
- Single source per term
- Referenced across pages
- Updates propagate everywhere
- Emitted as DefinedTerm
FAQ Pairs
Questions and answers live as repeatable pairs. The on-page display, FAQPage structured data, and the site's AI chat all read from the same source.
- Managed as Q&A pairs
- Auto-emitted FAQPage schema
- Partial display on service pages
- Shared with AI chat knowledge
Comparisons & Specs
Plan comparisons and spec sheets are stored as tables. Once you stop pasting HTML tables into the body, changes happen entirely in the CMS.
- Field-value pairs preserved
- Manage plans and specs centrally
- No missed updates on changes
- Machine-readable as a table
Freshness & Sourcing
Publish date and last-updated date are stored separately, with an as-of date on anything that changes. Pages whose freshness can't be judged get cited less.
- Separate publish and update dates
- Explicit as-of dates
- Revision history retained
- Sources as dedicated fields
What Changes
Facts Become Extractable
Pricing, scope, and lead time live as fields, so AI can cite them directly instead of parsing prose.
Display and Schema Stay in Sync
Both the page and its JSON-LD are built from the same input, so they cannot drift apart.
New Content Has a Home
With types defined up front, growing content stays organized and less dependent on individuals.
Process
Content Inventory
We map what exists, where, and at what granularity — surfacing duplicates and themes with no canonical page.
Type Design
We decide how definitions, FAQs, comparisons, and factual fields are split, down to a granularity editors can use without hesitation.
Implementation & Migration
We build the API schema and move existing content into the new types, scripting the migration when volume demands it.
Handover of Operating Rules
We document which type new content belongs to and how to decide when it's ambiguous.
FAQ
- Can we restructure the schema on an existing microCMS site?
- Yes. The usual approach is to add new fields to the existing API and migrate elements out of the body text. For large content volumes we script the migration through the microCMS API. It is also possible to change only the underlying structure while leaving the page appearance untouched.
- Does a finer-grained schema make writing harder for editors?
- It can, if the split is wrong. That is why we design around a granularity editors can use without hesitation — typically modeling only high-citation-value items such as definitions and FAQs as fields, and leaving the rest as regular body text.
- Can we commission just the schema design?
- Yes. We can handle design and migration strategy while your existing agency does the implementation and front end, delivering the design document and migration procedure.
Individual Areas
Automatic Structured Data (JSON-LD)
Publish an article and JSON-LD is attached automatically — built from the same fields as the page itself, so the two never drift.
